One of my greatest joys in life is sleeping late on
Saturday. You will soon understand why. My mornings
actually begin in what most people would call “the middle of the night.” That
is definitely a misnomer. For me, morning is when you wake up after a long
stretch of sleep; let’s say 4 to 5 hours.
So sometime in the (very) early morning one of my sons comes into my
room and whispers, “Mommy! Mommy?” I then awaken and stare at my son and wait
for what he has to tell me. He almost
always says, “Mommy, I had a nightmare. Can I come and sleep next to you?” I
always say yes, and then I wonder if I should ask him what he dreamed about. I
usually don’t in the hopes that I might get back to sleep quickly, but
maybe this is not considerate of me. So
sometimes I ask him, “What did you dream?” He usually can’t remember, thank
goodness, and I can get back to sleep pretty fast, plus I also get “good mother”
points for very little extra effort. However sometimes he does remember and it almost always
has to do with being chased by monsters. And then I think he needs to watch
fewer movies and play less video games, do more homework, do more chores,
send him to more after school classes, and maybe even get him into therapy. And
then my alarm goes off. Its 5:45a.m., and up I go into the shower. By 6:15 I’m
dressed and ready to take the dog for a walk. When I get back, it’s time to
wake the kids, make them their lunches, feed them their breakfasts, help the
little one find clean socks, and help them all find their shoes. I make sure they have everything they need for
school, (I’m talking about three little boys ages 7, 10 and 12). I walk with
the little one to the bus, with the dog, and then after they have all gone, I take
the dog for another walk, only this time the walk is for me. When I get home I do the
dishes, put away the milk and other perishables. Then I go to work. I usually
feel like an entire day’s worth of things got done, but its only 8 in the
morning. Now you know why sleeping late on the weekends is one of my greatest joys.
